All About Spelling

When asked to review the program All About Spelling, I have to admit that I rolled my eyes a bit before I received my packet. My 3 older girls are not good spellers at all! We tried all kinds of workbooks, copywork, and spelling programs. None of them really worked at all. My oldest daughter’s spelling improved when she started writing things on the computer and noticed that misspelled words were underlined in red, but my other 2 daughters still struggle a lot with their spelling.

My son is 8, so I still have some time to develop him into a good speller. I’m not much of a person for curriculum. I usually think it is great, but then my children and I end up hating it. I thought that was what was going to happen with All About Spelling.

First of all I was impressed that everything was packaged nicely and was easy to get organized. The cards all tear apart very easily at the perforations and come with index tabs for easy organizing. I love the way that the lessons are set up too. I don’t like to have to prepare a lesson, so I was pleasantly surprised that I could basically just open the book and skim over the lesson and go.

All About Spelling is truly a multi-sensory approach to spelling (as the subtitle states). It covers visual, auditory and kinesthetic steps in each lesson. I love that part.

You get:

  • Step by step lesson plans
  • Teaching tools for interactive learning
  • Customizable content for every student
  • Built-in daily review

I received Levels 1 and 2, although they provide levels up to 5 with Level 6 being released soon. We are most of the way through Level 1 and will most certainly finish that and Level 2 by the end of the school year.

Before I tell you any more about the program, let me interject here that my son really likes this program. He likes building the words, working with the letters, and even spelling the words on paper. I never thought he would enjoy spelling the fun phrases that we have been doing such as “swim fast” and “pond frog”. I thought I would be met with all kinds of resistance to writing words, but he just writes whatever I tell him to write from the lesson. He has even climbed up on the table across from me to give me a hug during the lessons a few times. He enjoys coloring in the chart when we are done with a lesson, which is usually every day.

Now more on what you get with All About Spelling…  All cards and letter tiles are color coded. The Phonogram (sound) cards are yellow. The Sound cards are red. The Key (rules or generalizations about spelling) cards are blue, and the Word cards are green. You also get a page of letter tiles that are printed on hard plastic. You will need to cut these apart as you need them, but they are easy to cut and high quality. They even give you the little magnets to stick on the back of each letter tile if you choose to use a magnet board instead of a table.

I have to say that All About Spelling has to be my favorite spelling program so far. I have seen more results, enjoyed the multi-sensory learning approach and been amazed at my child’s progress and the ease of the lessons. I look forward to continuing this program for a long time and look forward to the results it will produce.

I showed this to a friend who has done lots of assessments for other homeschoolers and homeschools herself and she was very impressed with the program too.

The Starter Kit is $26.95 and is a one-time purchase for all levels. Each Level is $29.95 for one student with extra student kits available for $14-95-19.95. I think they are well worth it for what they provide in value to our family.

As a member of the Homeschool Crew, I was given this product to review. I was not paid for this post and do not have to return the product to the vendor.  The opinions expressed in this post are those of the blog owner (me).

Aren’t those little phrases fun? I expected a lot more resistance about writing these from my writing-phobic boys. Instead, they start figuring out ways to turn them into really crazy sentences. Love it!
