AVKO

As part of the Homeschool Crew AVKO has issued us a membership to their site in exchange for an honest review. I’ll give you my best attempt at telling you what this site has to offer and what I think about it.

AVKO is a non-profit organization the uses multi-sensory methods to teach dyslexic and non-dyslexic students. We all know that the more senses we use, the better we learn. Whether your child has dyslexia or not, this site can give you some great information.

With a membership you receive:

  • Audios from seminars given by founder Don McCabe.
  • Videos on how to teach dyslexics and other teaching tips.
  • Samples of books they have for sale
  • Everything you want to know about dyslexia and how to teach someone that has it.
  • $400 worth of ebooks and reading comprehension works (includes Teaching of Reading and Spelling 364 pages, The Patterns of English Spelling, To Teach a Dyslexic, Starting at Square One, and The Reading Teacher’s List of Over 5,500 Basic Spelling Words
  • 25% discount on all printed books in their catalog
  • Links to word games and software you can use.
  • Teaching aids and articles.

I had some trouble navigating around the site. I guess it’s just not organized in the way that my brain thinks. :) I was glad to find the reading for comprehension pages but then I wasn’t sure what to do with them once the child read them. I also found that some of the items I wanted had to be purchased. But for $25 a year (only $2 per month) what did I expect?

The supplemental resources were good too. I found some good SAT vocabulary flashcards that I could print off. There are also keyboarding and handwriting reference materials.

Some of the free ebooks they offer to members are over 300 pages! If your child has dyslexia, this could be the answer for you. If you don’t know how to help them after you look over this site, then there is probably nothing that will help you.

Even if your children don’t have learning problems, there is plenty of information at AVKO that can help any homeschool parent. There is a $25 membership fee per year, but you would pay that for even one of the free ebooks that are included in the membership.  For about$2 per month the membership is definitely worth it.

As a member of the Homeschool Crew, I was given this product to review. I was not paid for this post and do not have to return the product to the vendor.  The opinions expressed in this post are those of the blog owner (me).
