Financial Accounting Course

I had the privilege of reviewing a Financial Accounting Course called Professor in a Box, designed especially for homeschool students. Since one of my daughters is a senior and would like to go into business for herself as an esthetician (spa owner), I thought that this would be a good course for her to take. She absolutely hates math, so this course was met with quite a bit of resistance. She has been slow in getting going with this and is working on the third lesson.

The course consists of 12 chapters broken down into 28 lessons all on 4 DVDs. You can print off the vocabulary, problems, and tests or view them on the computer. There are NO textbooks or long reading assignments!! Yay!

The student watches the slides for each lesson while the instructor speaks. The professor is Michael P. Licata PhD who is an accounting professor at Villanova University. This is definitely a college level course but only requires that you have completed basic math such as Algebra.

You won’t find much hand holding in this Financial Accounting course. It is taught by a college professor, who says that when your student is done with this course, he/she will be ready to take and pass the CLEP test for Accounting. There are approximately 4-15 problems per chapter and they say that each lesson could take anywhere from 40-180 minutes to complete. Some of the problems are explained on the video and some are to be completed by the student without any help. They can easily view the solutions when they are done so they can see if they completed the problems correctly.

The course can be spread out over a year doing 1 lesson a week. Or you can complete the course in a semester or in the summer doing more lessons each week.

You receive a case with 4 DVDs, instruction booklet, calculator and pencil. You can print the syllabus and any other information from the DVDs. To view a sample lesson you can check here.

I made the mistake in lesson 3 of not printing off all the problem sets for some reason. My daughter watched the slides and was clueless. Now that she has the problems and I have worked with her a bit on this, I think she is ready to follow this course with minimal help from me.

I think if you had a motivated student that wanted to take CLEP tests, wanted to be prepared for college, or enjoyed Math somewhat, they could complete this course on their own.

This is a good quality course that seems to be interesting and challenging at the same time. I have a minor in accounting and do some bookkeeping, so it all made sense to me. I would say that waiting until your student is a Junior or Senior until they take this course will give them more benefit than if they take it sooner than that.

The cost for Financial Accounting Professor in a Box is $149, but there is a special right now for 134.99 with free shipping. There is even a money back guarantee if your student completes the first 3 lessons and you aren’t satisfied, they will refund your money.
