Growing Healthy Homes
I came across a wonderful Science resource called Growing Healthy Homes that I was able to review this last month. The book I received is called Nutrition 101: Choose Life.
If you are looking for a great Science curriculum, wanting to eat more healthy, or just get some good healthy eating information for yourself or your children, this book will do it.
I have been reading about healthy eating for about 20 years. What time and energy it would have saved me to have this kind of resource available to me. There is SO much information in this book, but it is organized in such a way that it doesn’t feel overwhelming at all. I love the recipes and charts, but then I’m a recipe and chart person. The pictures are wonderful too.
Here are some of the things I liked about Nutrition 101:
- they encourage you and your children to be responsible for your own health
- they address picky eaters and what to do about fast food
- they give you ways to add more protein and fiber into your diet with lists of foods in those categories
- they talk about cooking with coconut and olive oil and how to bake with whole grains (and why you would want to)
- they have great recipes
- you get good information about alternatives to sugar and artificial sweeteners
We have been using the Classical Conversations model in our home this year. We have a Science concept for each week. We introduce it at the beginning of the week and then we find resources during the week to reinforce it. I was wishing for a comprehensive Science resource that I could use this year and, lo and behold, Nutrition 101 had everything I needed along with GREAT pictures.
I also like the fact that they give you suggestions for what to do each day of the week to implement this system with a Monday through Friday list. The book is broken up into units and the units are broken up into weeks. You can use their recipes for each week or just read the material. Your children will probably remember the material better if you engage their sense with a recipe too:)
I just love the way this book is organized and how they make it very pleasing to the eye to read and learn. There are 448 pages packed with information. When you order you receive the hard copy of the book and also a CD with the same information on it. That way you can print off certain pages for certain children if you like. The only thing I would change about the CD version is to have links from the table of contents to where the information is located in the document. For instance, if I wanted to know about the digestive system, I could go to the table of contents, click on “digestive system”, and it would take me to the page with that information on it.
Some people might think that the $129.95 price is a little high, but think of it as your Science and Health curriculum along with a way to help your family eat better. If your children have this health information, they will be more likely to want to eat better. You might find that you will be able to save money on health and prescription costs if your whole family gets to eat more healthy food.
Order your copy of Nutrition 101: Choose Life today! You won’t be sorry….
