Homeschool Laws
If you have been looking into homeschooling for any length of time, you know that there are homeschool laws and that they are different for every state.
It makes sense for states to keep track of homeschoolers and how many of us there are. Superintendents can be a little bit leary of homeschoolers because they know people that homeschool whose children just sit and play video games all day because the parents can’t get their children to do what they need them to do.
A great majority of homeschoolers DO work with their children and DO care that they do more with their day than play video games. We still need to comply with the homeschool laws and assure the state that we are actually doing something with our children.
There is no reason to be intimidated or frustrated by these laws. If you are really supposed to homeschool your child(ren), it will just be another step in the process .
Some states don’t even require you to let them know you are homeschooling and other states want a list of your intended curriculum or even grades and attendance. Whatever your state’s requirements, know that you can meet these requirements as many before you have already done.
To find out the homeschool laws in your state, you can go to www.hslda.org/laws/default.asp and read about them there.
To find out what you need to provide to your local or county school superintendent, you can either talk to a homeschooler that you know or call the superintendent’s office.
If you live in a city or town, you will report to your school superintendent. If you live in a village, very small town (like us), or in the country you will report to your county superintendent.
It’s not difficult to get this information or to complete the process, you just need to get the paperwork and forms and fill them out. Most school districts or county districts will be very pleasant to work with if they have the needs of the child as their highest goal.
