Internet Field Trip
I thought I would start an Internet field trip series this week. Whether the weather is cold and you don’t feel like going out or if you have little ones at home and can’t take the older ones out or you just want to take some virtual field trips, these links should help you.
The Virtual Body - You can get a virtual tour of 4 areas of the human body – brain, skeleton, heart, and digestive tract. This is not a terribly exciting site and you have to click on items and read about them, but if you have a child interested in how the body works, you’ll be able to find all the information you want to know here. There are some animated sections and you can get a narrated tour for those children that don’t want to sit and read a lot of information. You can zoom in on certain areas and even play “organize your organs” to see how much you know.
Virtual Field Trip of How Aluminum is Made - Start with “It All Starts With Dirt” site and then come back to this site. Be sure to watch the 3 minute video on how aluminum is made. You can also find information about the timeline of aluminum and all about Charles Martin Hull the almunimum pioneer and founder of Alcoa.
Smithsonian American Art Museum - You will find online exhibitions (complete with information about the artist and pictures of his works), access the SAAM blog, watch a listen to a huge list of podcasts, webcasts and interactives! This list alone could take a month to get through. This is a very interesting and informative website that is a wonderful resource for American art. I highly recommend this one.
Although this Internet field trip list is a much cheaper alternative than traveling all over your state our country, always remember that there’s nothing like being there. Try to get to as many places as you can since your children will remember a real place better than a website. Hopefully these sites were helpful. More to come next time.
