Math Galaxy

The math software Math Galaxy is produced by Galaxy of Education. I was able to review their Whole Numbers Fun software program. Their philosophy is that children need both computers AND teachers (parents) to learn math. I like the fact that they think children should use both.

Their Whole Numbers Fun program is quite extensive. They cover a whole range of topics from basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division all the way through patterns, time, length graphs, and much more. You can view the whole list of subjects at their site.

The program is pretty easy to navigate. I finally figured out to use the escape key when I wanted to go back in the program instead of pressing “quit” all the time :)   You just choose what area you want your child to work on and then let them begin the problems. The program tells them right away if they answered correctly. Then it asks if they want to do another problem.

When they answer problems correctly they earn robots and find treasures. These come in handy when they play the Labyrinth game. It won’t let you play the game until you have answered questions.

On one hand I like the fact that children can choose whether they want to do another problem because then they don’t get stuck in a program feeling like they can never get out. On the other hand, some children might take the easy way out and only answer one or a few questions. For my son I told him he needed to answer 10 questions before he could stop.

We used mostly the addition and subtraction sections because he is in 2nd grade and isnt’ ready for some of the harder problems yet. I know this program will come in handy in the future though. They say that you can use their programs from K-12. This one should take us through 5th or 6th grade.

If you’re looking for a good computer program that you can use for multiple children for many years, has a money back guarantee, rewards your children for their efforts, reinforces math concepts, implements word problems, and adds in a little fun with games, then Math Galaxy should work well for you!

You can order a Math Galaxy Whole Numbers Fun CD for just $29.95 with free shipping at http://www.mathgalaxy.com/
