Mathletics

I had never heard of the Mathletics website before I was asked to do a review of this program. I thought it would just be another math flashcard site, but I was pleasantly surprised.

I had my 8 year old son try out the program for a few days. My trial period was for only 5 days and I think we were only able to use 3 days of it. My son really liked the site and we were both sad when the trial period was over. I’m considering getting this program for him.

What’s included in Mathletics?

  •  Over 750 learning activities for children ages 5-14
  • Competition with children from all over the world without any direct student contact (we didn’t use this at all. I didn’t even know it was available.)
  • Weekly reports emailed to parents
  • Homeschool friendly site
  • Personal Mastery dial tracking your child’s progress
  • Lots of rewards and certificates for progress made
  • Student can work at their own pace
  • 10 day money back guarantee if you don’t like it

Students can make their own avatar (character) to look like them or whoever they want their avatar to look like. My son really liked this part.
Children instantly know if they entered the correct answer or not. They have short lessons (at least the ones my son did). There are 10 questions to answer in each section. I found that he wanted to do more than one section.

I really liked the way they asked the questions. The problems were different than just your simple flashcards. It’s hard to describe. They just make it interesting, challenging and fun all at the same time. One example of this was when they were counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s. It wasn’t just counting from 1. You might have to count by 5s starting with 13 and going up from there. My son was not put off by this at all. He just worked with me and tried to understand the problem and caught on very quickly.

I would really recommend this program to anyone, especially if your child prefers to work on the computer, needs instant answers to their problems, or needs competition and rewards when doing math.

The cost is a $59 per year subscription per child if you enter the number “9″ as Human Calculator’s favorite number. Otherwise the subscription rate is $99 per year. The discount rate factors out to $1.13 per week or $1.64 per week if you just count the school year.
