Penmanship

Have you ever heard of Presidential Penmanship? I had never heard of this program until I received a CD for review as part of the Homeschool Crew. Although I am familiar with The Book Peddler because they are located about an hour from where we live, I guess I haven’t been keeping up on what they have been doing lately.

I love this idea of taking quotes from the presidents and turning them into penmanship practice. Zeezok Publishing (which, I’m assuming is the publishing company associated with The Book Peddler homeschool catalog company) has done a great job with these.

They have penmanship practice for grades 1-12 and cover Abeka, BJU, D’Nealian, Getty Dubay Italic, Handwriting Without Tears and Zaner-blozer. You can choose which program you wish to follow when you order. They show samples of each program on their site.

We had played around with some Italic many years ago but have just been doing plain old manuscript and cursive for a while. The disk we received was the BJU Style program. I had my 8 year old son and 14 year old daughter do some age appropriate pages from this CD.

I was a little surprised that they both did the first day without even one complaint. I think all our reading has given them a great respect for our presidents and they are interested in what they have to say.

Their lack of complaint may also be that they enjoyed a different writing style and they liked writing in a different way than normal. My son has continued to follow the penmanship practice and shows me each day what he accomplishes.

I expected my daughter to balk at having to do penmanship practice, but she asked me to print off more of the sheets for her and she did two in one day. Hopefully their handwriting will improve using this program.

I liked the fact that the Book Peddler catalog was also available on this disk. I was able to browse over the great composer series that they now have. Looks very interesting.

I met the owners of this company at our state homeschool conference several years ago and they seemed very knowledgeable about literature and homeschooling and were very easy to talk to. I’ve always liked their catalog and how it was laid out.

The penmanship CDs are just $39.99 (regular price is $63.92) each for whichever program you choose. I’m assuming you will have penmanship practice for grades 1-12 no matter what version you choose since that is what was on the BJU CD.

I love the idea of having one program that I can use for all my children and that I can print off only those sheets that we will use.
