Quarter Mile Math

I received a review copy of Quarter Mile Math about a month ago. I had heard of this program before but never had a chance to use it.

As with any program you use with homeschooling, whether it be a book or software, you have to use it for it to be effective. If a program is fun enough, like this one is, then your child puts it to good use. If it is not as fun or is a chore, then the Mom has to find a way to implement it into her schedule to remind the children to use it.

My son hates flashcards so I was happy to find a way to reinforce math facts using Quarter Mile Math. He thinks this program is fun and willingly plays it, which is a plus for any program in my book.

A fun feature of the program is that you can choose to use a race car or a horse for each race that you do. Don’t worry though, they don’t advocate horse racing and gambling. These horses don’t have any riders or jockeys. It’s just pure fun to race either a horse or car.

Another great feature is that the races use the child’s last 5 races to help them improve and keep getting better. They are really racing against themselves working to improve their scores. I love the variety of options for the parent to choose what  the child gets tested with. They can be tested on a large scale of math operations. For my son I chose addition facts 4+4 and below. I will be able to increase this little by little as he spends more time on this game.

If a child answers a problem incorrectly, their car or horse doesn’t slow down. They keep going and get 3 chances to answer before the answer is provided for them. Then they pick up from there and keep going. If they have a bad race, that is OK because that race just gets thrown out from their 5 highest scores.

It seems like they have though of just about everything with this program. We are going to enjoy using Quarter Mile Math (homeschoolers link) this year:)

If you want to use the deluxe version you can purchase a subscription with this program. You can either get a monthly subscription for $2.95 per month, a yearly subscription for $19.95 per year, or a 2-year subscription for $34.95. All subscriptions are for the whole family. If you just want to purchase the CD for either level 1,2, or 3 you can make a one-time purchase and not get the benefits of the subscription. It’s kind of nice to have the option.

There is also a homeschool section on their website with information on how to get started, tips and info, printable progress charts, and user forum. Those are certainly some of the features I would look for in a homeschool membership.

Quarter Mile Math gets a thumbs up from this veteran homeschool Mom.
