Raymond and Dorothy Moore Homeschool
I met Raymond and Dorothy Moore at a homeschool seminar about 10 years ago in Ohio. They were pretty advanced in years even at that time, but had such a wonderful heart that transcended their years. They talked at the seminar all day and even visited with people during the breaks.
I was impressed by all they had done with their lives. They have taught and researched and worked with MANY people. I would think that anyone that was even thinking about homeschooling should listen to someone that has as much experience as these two do.
Many research reports they mentioned supported their philosophy of “Better Late than Early” especially for boys. They talked about the importance of having books in the home and interacting with your children. I still have their little brochure and catalog even after all these years.
Their philosophy is based on study, work and service. For study they suggest using hands on and self teaching materials in a loving environment. Obviously they suggest reading and singing with your children from birth.
For work they suggest first working at home with you and then branching into home businesses as the children grow. We have definitely implimented this in our home. Our children thrive in this environment. They quickly understand the concepts of supply and demand, laying out cash to pay for supplies, and much more.
For service they suggest visiting neighbors and those that are ill. When children reach out to others it makes them less self-centered. They can also perform simple tasks for people like raking leaves, painting, shoveling snow or washing someone’s car. This also works well when the whole family participates. The children see the parent’s example of service and can continue that their whole lives.
The Moore’s book Successful Homeschool Family is a great read. I still have the book here as reference when I am feeling stressed or burned out. They have such a simple, no nonsense approach but yet stress a loving caring relationship between parent and child. Another book that they wrote is called Home Grown Kids.
I recommend any of their books or audios if you can find them. Veteran and new homeschooler alike will benefit from the information they can glean from these wonderful seasoned veterans of homeschooling.
