Sarah’s Wish

Recently I received an autographed copy of the book Sarah’s Wish because I am part of the TOS homeschool crew. One of the benefits of being part of the crew is getting great books like this one I am about to tell you about.

Sarah’s Wish is written by a 62 year old grandfather named Jim Baumgardner. All of his 9 grandchildren are home schooled and these books are written for them. There is no profanity, sex, or anything offensive to young readers. Wouldn’t it be great to have your grandfather write books for you? We get to reap the benefits of his writing and read over their shoulders and hear a great historical story.

I must admit, at first, that I wasn’t too excited about having to read a novel, but once I got started on this one I found myself reading more than I had intended to read each night. The story moves along well and keeps you wanting more.

The book is set in the late 1800s in Ohio during the time of slavery in America. The story is about a girl named Sarah who lost her mother in an accident (in the first chapter of all things!) and how she is carrying on her mother’s work in the underground railroad. Sarah is a great Christian role model with a good heart who wants to please God. She is willing to obey adults and defer to their authority.

Even though the book doesn’t contain any bad language, Sarah does encounter some evil people and issues. I think it’s important to include these because we all will deal with evil and evil people at some point in our lives.

When you purchase Sarah’s Wish you also receive a link to the audio download from the publisher in the back of the book. You can download the whole book to your computer or MP3 player and listen to the book instead of read it. Or you can do both. What a great idea!

Jim Baumgardner also publishes a monthly newsletter with interesting facts from history that children and young adults would want to know. There is also a question of the month. The author encourages people to write or email him and ask questions or send comments.

The author has written 2 more books in this series called Sarah’s Promise and Sarah’s Escape. He is also working on a 4th book. My favorite part of the ordering process is that shipping is free! You can order Sarah’s Wish at the website http://www.sarahbooks.net/. Be sure to check out their homeschool and review pages too.
