Sue Patrick Workbox System

I had the privilege of receiving a review copy of the Sue Patrick Workbox System for being on the Old Schoolhouse Crew review team. I can’t believe that I have never seen this system before after all these years of homeschooling. What is it you ask?

Basically, it is a simple-to-follow system for homeschooling. Sue developed it when working with her autistic son many years ago and has worked with countless other families in helping them to implement this system in their homes. Let me start out by saying that this is NOT just for children with learning disabilities. It can be used by any students of any age or type of learner. It can be used by visual, auditory or kinesthetic learners with ease. It can be used by preschoolers all the way up to high schoolers.

Any teaching or learning style can use this system. Whether you like using textbooks or unit studies or anything in between, you will be able to find a way to make this system work for you. She talks about how this has changed many people’s lives and helps them get so much more done.

When you purchase the book whether it be the ebook format or hard copy, along with your purchase you get free access to the forms that are referenced in the book. She explains herself very well and uses lots of pictures so that you will know exactly what to do and how to set it up.

She seems to have thought of everything. There is room for group activities, working with Mom and working independently. With this system, both the parent and child knows exactly how much the child has accomplished and how much is still left to do for the day.

This system provides structure for even the most disorganized individuals. It helps provide organization and structure to your homeschool. It’s not all about the physical environment though. She also gives teaching tips on the educational structure and how to incorporate review and assessments.

The only problem that I ran into when implementing this system for my 8 year old son was that he was overwhelmed by the many boxes. He thought there was more work than what he was used to because it took up more room. When I assured him that it was the same pile of work I had been giving him, just spread out into boxes, he understood.

I was a little intimidated by the “Centers” that she suggests using for some of the work boxes, but after reading over the purpose and philosophy of them again, I understand their importance to the whole system. They give the children a break in their day where they can do something hands on or auditory but still learn a great deal. You don’t necessarily have to be creative to use the centers. They help with review and skill building too.

There are lots of resource ideas at the end. This is a system that you can start right away. You don’t have to wait for a vacation break or a new year. You can use this with what materials you have and use her tips to enhance it and make it the best it can be.

To purchase the Sue Patrick Workbox System, just go to her website at http://www.workboxsystem.com/index.html. You can get the ebook like I did for $19, the hard copy guide book for $19.95, various kits and supplies, all the way up to the complete consulting package for $119.95.

Let me know if you have any comments or questions about this system or if you have ever used it before.
