The Great Latin Adventure
I received the Great Latin Adventure program to review as part of the TOS Homeschool Crew. I think this is my last review through them
.
We’ve never used a Latin program before but this looks like a solid program. I’ve seen quite a few comments saying that people wish they had found this first before trying all the other programs out there.
The author Katharine Birkett has taught this program to many students and has provided this program for many homeschool families. She gives full credit to God for helping her write and produce this program.
Level 1 consists of a student work text and a teacher manual along with a pronunciation CD. There are 3 units broken down into 12 chapters. The program is for beginners in grades 3-4 and older. Here is a quote from the teacher’s manual: “Challenging yet incremental, it’s rich in imaginative translation – from and into Latin. Well-written derivative exercises are built into each chapter. Classical pronunciation is taught, and macrons are provided. The Great Latin Adventure is for every educational setting: for homeschools, homeschool co-ops and schools. Thoughtful features make it a pleasure to use. And the Great Latin Adventure supports the goals of Christian parenting.”
Some things that this program is not – not self teaching, video program, immersion program, or an oral or conversational program. It is for the beginner, though, who has had at least a year or 2 of English grammar.
There is some teacher preparation as you will need to read the grammar lesson and be familiar with it before you begin. The basic structure is that each chapter could take you about 3 weeks if you do Latin 3 times a week. She has it broken down into 9 days for each chapter. So level 1 could take you a year. You can make that time shorter or longer but that is about the average.
You begin with the vocabulary and the grammar lesson. There is a derivative worksheet, translation worksheet and study sheet. Each chapter provides a quiz at the end along with vocabulary flash cards to help along the way.
There are lots of teaching notes to help and the teacher manual is laid out very well and simply to make it easy to follow. I like the fact that the translation sentences are all related to family and biblical values.
If you’re looking for a thorough Latin program that you can use at your own pace where you guide your children along in the process, then The Great Latin Adventure is for you! You can view their FAQ pages or sample pages if you need more information.
You receive 232 pages packed full of help and information for just $15 without a binder or $22 with a binder. This is such a great deal!! I can’t believe they are offering this product at such a low price.
As a member of the Homeschool Crew, I was given this product to review. I was not paid for this post and do not have to return the product to the vendor. The opinions expressed in this post are those of the blog owner (me).
